Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru

The little sleepy town of Ollantaytambo….a pit stop on the train route from Cusco to Machu Picchu, it has not much to say for itself, but it is quaint in its own way. The Orient Express lines run through it, and we met there our train and the guys who traveled with us. After our exhilarating visit to the heights of the Pisac Mountain Ruins, we took the very decently-priced cabs of Peru from Pisac to Ollantaytambo.

The trains are very nice,  especially the Vistadome, with its 45% glass ceilings, affording one a good view of forests, mountaintops and snowcaps as the train meanders (quite) slowly down the tracks that run alongside the Urumbamba River.

The only ruins at Ollantay (as the locals abbreviate it) are its terraces, quite reminiscent of the ones we saw just a few hours ago in Pisac. Above and at the back of the terrace, atop the mountain the terrace sits, is a spectacular view of the surrounding valleys and accompanying mountains.
